Evolving!

English class was a turning point of my sophomore year not only because I have learned so many useful skills and knowledge, but also because this class made me to become a person who loves learning and working hard. I want to thank Ms. Guarino who keeps helping me when I lost my way, and she is not only my teacher, but also a good friend. We always talk and share ideas about books, movies and things that happened in class and on campus. I also want to thank all my classmates because they always participate in class to share their thoughts which helps me so much when I was trying to understand books or author’s meaning. They also helped me with my homework and reviewing. I hope that we can all achieve our goals in the future, and we should keep our good works up in next year.

I have learned so many things in this class this year, and I want to talk abou the three things that change me the most. The first thing is what I am doing now -- wring blogs. When the first time I heard Ms. Guarino said that we would write 500 words blogs, my heart was broken in pieces, so it died so “Piecefully”. The first time I wrote 500 words was so tough, and I spent more than a hour to finiit. However, after so many blogs, I became better and faster, and the most importand is that I started enjoying to write blogs. Writing blogs also made me to get help from writing center. I did not remember that there was a place called wrting center last year, but now I can tell you who will be in the writing center during C period which is my free period without looking at the scheduel. Every time after I went to writing center, I learnd new skills from teachers, and I used in my next writing homework. The second thing I learned is the happiness and glamour of reading. To be honest, I hated reading at the begaining of the year, but now I like to read different books and study different characters’ stories, feeling and emotions. It feels, like I am part of the book, the character and scenes. I will keep reading more and more books. The last things I learned is that the connection between drama, books and real life. I saw three shows that was presented by Cheshire Academy varsity actors. Three of them were extremely good, and they all brought me into a dramatic world. I will take IB Lit and Perf SL and I will join the theater.

My favorite book this year is Gathering of Pearls because this is the book reflect my life who study abroad in United States. I can truely feel whst Sookan feels and thinks. Every books in this class that we have read were good. But only Gathering of Pearls was the one which I can feel deeply. I have a so similar experience, like Sookan. I had a hard time when I first time came hear, and after a year, I made so many good friends and I have a good roommate now.

I want to read some mystery books because it will attract me to read, or I might forget the book because I am too free in summer which is not good. I suggest we can also read some comic books.

I  am looking forward to see he summer reading list, and I am so excited for next year’s class. We will keep having fun in class. I hope everyone can do their best in finally test and having fun in summer.

Surprise

The only word that I want say is surprise. I went to the black about three times a week before the show, but when I came into the black box on Thursday afternoon it looked like a extremely different place which I never been. When the music was on and the light was working, it gave me a feeling that bad things are going on. Thus show is a great show because it has so many talented actors and people who set the stage like Jack Jack. As a comic mystery, it is so successful because it ont only make the audience think and worried, but also make the audience laugh aloud.

The first thing that  make this a great show is that all the actors are working hard, and they are talented. I am taking acting class, so I know how hard it is to do a over two hours show especially the one have so many dialogue in a complicated logical order. They did the best job to deliver all the lines. Another important thing is blocking in the scene. There was 13 people on the stage, and I can saw every single one of them and their movements. I still remember the first time I did three people scene and I covered a person completely. The last thing is that all the lights and music were so good. When any one said that you are the killer the music have a weird sound and makes everyone to think about who really the killer is. I also want to give a special thank to my roommate Jack for helping the show to built the mystery. When I saw a hand killing the light, I recognized that it is Jack’s hand.

The second important thing that makes it a great show is the story line. At the start, I thought Andrew is the killer, but then I thought the lawyer because she always pushed everyone to say what they know, and she never leaves her position much. The truth is that she is the killer, but what police officer did scared me. I thought he is the good man at the start and I believe he will save them. However, the truth is so different the police officer actually helped the lawyer to kill people. Also the cook's reviviscence is the biggest surprise because I saw her were hung up. At the almost the end of the show, the cook came out and beat the police officer down. The only thing I can say is that this is a amazing show.

I suggest everyone go and see the show, and you will be as amazed as me. I wan to thank for all the actors hardworking and performance crew members' hard working. Because of them we enjoyed a great show, and I have learned from them. I hope that I can join the next show and I can make it a show that everyone like.

Ghost Or Imagination?

In my opinion, they are all  Cadence's imagination because many details in the book shows us that they are only exist in where Cadence shows up. However, many people say that they are ghost and only Cadence can see them. I believe that they are not ghost. For example, " The liars don't come to the dock when we pull in, and neither do Aunt Bess and Grandad" (Lockhart 65). As we all know, Gat, Johnny and Mirren are all her best friends, so they would love to welcome Cadence to come back. However, they didn't; if they are ghost, Cadence should saw them, so the truth is that they are all her imagination. Another example, " I open the laptop. Do a search and find all the notes addressed to her" (Lockhart 187). If they are all ghost, they should be able to open the email, but the truth is that Cadence opened the email by herself read by herself. I also find out that Mirren, Gat and Johnny always repeat what Cadence's mother told Cadence which means they don't have all the information either and they don't have their individual thought. Hat they told Cadence is what Cadence is trying to tell herself.

What was burned?

We had made so many hypotheses in class, and we also had some part that is correct. For example, we all considered that Johnny, Mirren and Gat was died at summer 15, so the ending did not make me surprised, but it did make me to think. To think what is the right to do and how money changed the way people consider things.

This book is most about how Cadence realized that what her grand dad did is not correct, and she was trying to change the way of how the family live. They are the one of the richest family in the world, but all those good resource did not make this family a happy family. Everyone in this family is being unhappy, worried and nervous. They consider that the only happy thing is the money, and their biggest goal is grandad's all money. However, after the fire, all the people in the family started to be nice to each other, and they starts to realize that there are so many thing could make them feel happy. I am keep asking my self. Did the fire really changed the family that much? I still don't have a clear answer, but there is one thing I believe. It is that all of the family members find out the relationships between people and love is much more important than money. We cannot say that this family is not a good family because no one can be completely calm and peaceful in front of a huge amount of money; however, we should always remember that people are not living for money, they are living to enjoy their time with people, every little touchable moments and love.

I like this book and this ending because it makes people to consider themselves and what they did. Sinclair family might be a story, but there are always stories like this going on. I want to say that we should be happy for what we have now, and we should always discover our own happiness from life experience but not from pieces of papers.</span>

Review

We know Cadence and other Liars set a fire on the beechwood island when all the other people were not on the island. Then we know why Gat feels like he is a outstander because granddad use every chance to remaind him he is not part of Sinclair. We also know what happened between Carrie and Penny during the night in summer fifteen, and also how granddad threat others.

Notes 16 to 25

From chapter 16 to chapter 25, they are most about after Cadence&rsquo;s accident she tried to find her memories back, she wants to see Gats and Liars on Beechwood iland again. In chapter 16 she talkes about the book her dad bought her, and she tells a story about how three princesses think about love and I think this story relect how she thinks about love.
Chapter 17 and 18 is about how she trys to find her memories. For example, asking her mom everyday.
Chapter 19 is about how her granddad changes her dad&rsquo;s Australia trip for summer 17 to the Beachwood iland trip, and she says that she loves her granddad but she doesn&rsquo;t like him.
Chapter 20 is a very interesting chapter because it asked a quustion about the story, and I think that she is thinking about that question a lot.
Chapter 21 and 22 is about her complex emotion aboiut Gat and also the difference her family trade her.
Chapter 23, 24 and 25 is allabout when she went back to the iland again how people react and how people changes. We can see a lot of difference than before. For example, Liars made the decision before Cadence came and they all thinks she is not apart of them like before because she has different hair and she looks sick.

Papers can never catch Fire

I have read five chapters of We Were Liars, and I think this is a really deep and thoughtful book. In the first five chapters, I have met a whole family. The oldest people are Harris and Tipper, and they have three children Carrie, Bess, and Penny. Carrie has two children Johnney and Will; Bess has four children Mirren, Liberty, Bonnie and Taft, and Liberty and Bonnie are twins; Penny has only Cadence who is also the main chapter of this book. At the begaining of the book, we see that Cadence’s father leaves them and she feel so sad, but her mother tells her to calm down right after her dad drive away. We also see their family’s characteristic, “The Sinclairs are athletic, tall, and handsome. We are oldmoney Democrats. Our chins square, and our tennis serves aggressive”(Lockhart 3). In this sentence, we can see this family is so rich and they seems like their perfect. However, the truth is not what they said. The truth is that they are trying to become the heiress of this huge family, so they are all pretending themselves to be a perfect person. However, I know that they will finally show their real self. In chapter three, time goes back to when Cadence was 14 years old, and they went to the Beechwood Island. Their family owns the island, and they all have a home on the island. Harris and Tipper lives in Clairmont; Carrie lives in Red Gate; Bess lives in Cuddledown; Penny lives in Winsemere.

No matter how you are good at pretending, you will show yourself one day. I believe that when this family show their real self, there will happen some terrible thing. I have seen so many tragedy and troubles because my two uncles were arguing about who should take the land when my grand mother is gone. At the start, they were trying to be nice to my grand parents, and they did not even show their bad side in front of them until last Chinese New Year. My uncle had a disagreement with my grand parents, then he slapped the door and he left during the dinner. I can tell you that he was a really nice gentleman in my opinion because he always bought fruits and food for my grand parents. However, once he realized that he cannot get what he wants, he became a absolute hoodlum. I consider that this will have so many changes in the fellow chapters, and we will see all the lies to be uncovered. To be honest, this book has remaindered me so many thing that happened in the real life. Thus, lies won’t be covered forever, and we will finally find out.

This would be even more interesting than the last one because this one has more liars, and this book has a bigger back story. I think this book is talking more about human nature. I am looking forward to see why they lie; what they do. I hope the ending won’t be too sad. I am going to read the book now. See you next blog.

Chapter 8,9 notes

In this two chapter, Lerenzo has been to the hospital to visit her grandma; however, the main goal is that he wants to get some sleeping pills for his sister Olivia. His grandma is so sick and week, so she wants Lerenzo to stay longer which gives Lerenzo so many troubles because he needs to go back without anyone's notice. The longer he spend on the way the more dangerous he is.

Lerenzo also forgot to bring his cell phone with him, so he cannot track the silver monkey like the last time he went back to cellar. Finally he waites long time to get in, and he also takes some food in silver monkey's house. In the chapter 9, at the first he thinks that his sister is died, so he is so worried. However, he tried so many ways to wake his sister up. He is so lucky that his sister is not died. At the end he tells his mother about his sister, and his mother seems like she does not care about her so much.

Reaction

I think this ending is not what I thought before. I thought that  Lerenzo would have a nice conversation with his sister, and they would go out and do some interesting thing. However, the truth is that when he sees her after 10 years, she is already died. To be honest, I am feeling so sad and hopeless because the only two people who really understand Lerenzo had gone. I think is must be hard to Lerenzo, but Lerenzo knows that she will die someday, and he just wants her to be peaceful and happy. So this is also a good ending. We can see that Lerenzo has changed a lot, and this is also the biggest and best thing he had in his life. If I were him, I would miss that cellar; that days; that memories.

Chapter5 summary

In chapter 5, we read so many details about Lerenzo's sister. I am interested in this character because she has some interesting background information that I need to dig. This chapter is most about Lerenzo's sister goes to his house to find things  that she had left there. She also finds that Lerenzo hides in the cellar, and she stays in the cellar with Lerenzo for a night. As we can see, she is not in the good shape and she has no money on her, so she had to find a place to live. When she finds out that Lerenzo is hiding, she uses it to make Lerenzo to let her live with him for a night. She can ask her father to help her; however she hearts her father because her father doesn't really love her and he left her and her mother. I am looking forward to read more about her.

Olivia

Olivia is Lerenzo's half sister because she was born by another woman who had a relationship with Lerenzo's father. As we can see, she doesn't like her father, and she feels bad when her father helps her. I consider that she has a really bad childhood because her father has to leave her and her mother alone. She was so beautiful, but she is not in the good shape now. I think that she gave her self up because she lost almost everything she could lose. All those things directly cause that she does not accept her father as her father. She always say that it is your dad to Lerenzo. I am interested in this character than Lerenzo because I consider that she must has some secrets that build this character.

3/30 In class writing

Lorenzo's mother was trying to pull her car in a free parking place. Suddenly, they hitted another yellow smart car's mirrow. Then the people from the other car said something really bad and did rude thing such as  yanking Lorenzo's mother. At the same time, Lorenzo was so angry and emotional, and he thought about to kill that guy who called his mother bitch. The whole thing made Lerenzo so emotional and extremely angry because no one can suffer another person to call their mother bitch. Also, the guy yanked her mother, and Lerenzo's mother fell on the ground in the rain. In my imagination, I can feel how sad and wronged his mother was. If I were him, I would go out and argue with the guy. However, he was too fear to go out of the car. This thing is so important to him because this was the first time that he was angry, and he cannot do anything to it because he was afraid. It influence him, and it also teaches him there are some thing he cannot fight with, so he had to think how to control his emotion.

Review

This chapter is about a day when Lerenzo hides in the basement. In my opinion, he is dreaming in his head. For example, he thinks that he is the last one in Rome and he also thinks that he has slep for ages. They are all his imaginations. I consider that he is too boring, so he starts to dreaming to kill some time. He also had a conversation with his mom by phone call. In the dialogue between him and his father, he is nervous and worried because he cannot let anyone else except himself to improve that he is actually on the trip, and he doesn't want his mother to find out that he is in the basement. It is a interesting chapter because it gives us so many questions such as if he can hide for a week? If he can find another person to call his mom? Will his mom find out what really is going on? I am looking forward to see the next chapter.

In class writing

I like Lorenzo both as a character and a person because I think he is a good person inside, but he just does not know how to express himself. In the first two chapters, I see him as a hopeless kid, and I want to save him if I can. He is too shy to make frinds and get into the new group. I remember he pretend to be a kid who bullies others in his school because he wants to protect himself away from bullies. In my opinion, he is just scared and worried because he has no friends in school. If I were his schoolmate, I would be friends with him and influence him by using my positive energy. I know that having no friends at school is very tough for everyone, and it also will cause kids getting shier and more short-spoken. Once children start to blocking themselves from others, it will become harder and harder to get them back in the society. I hope that parents can find out as soon as possible and they can help their kids to beat the difficulty. Thus, I like Lorenzo, and I also want to help him out. We should not define anyone by just looking their outside reaction but inside.

Confidence Is Not Arrogance!

I saw The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at The Black Box Theater, Cheshire Academy. It was a excellent show. Every actor did his or her best job in the show, and I suggest that everone should go and see the play. I like the character Chip and Barfee so much because I learned one most important thing from them. The things is that we should always be confident, and we should never be arrogant.

We should always trust in ourselves. There is nothing that is impossible; however, people always doubt their abilities before they try to do something. For example, in the show The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the main charecter Barfee believes that he can spell words correctly because of her magic foot, but when Logainne's father spills coke on the floor, Barfee's magic foot doesn't work. He is so nervous and fear; however, he does spell the word correctly without the magic foot. At that moment, I saw that she jumps and yells excitedly and happily. This kind of thing happens not only in the show, but also in the real life. I remember when I was training my leg last night in weight room, I putted 9 plates on the machine, and each of them was 45 pounds. To be honest, I thought it was my limitation, but there was a sound in my head that kept saying a crazy idea "Maybe I can put one more each side". Actually, I did put one more each side, and I can handle it. I was tinking that if I never had that creazy thought, I could never know what I cnpan do. As we can see, we should always believe in ourselves and sometime we should push ourselves to break the limitation.

We should be confident, but we should never be arrogant. Lots of people become losers, and the reason is not because they don't have their skills. The real reason is because they over think their power, and they think that others have pour skill. In my opinion, the biggest enemy to us is always ourselves. I remember a main character who is called Chip. He was the champion of the last spelling bee, so he too confident to focus on the match. Then, he fall asleep during the game, and suddenly Vice-Principal calls him up to spell the word. However, he has erection, so he asks if he can escape this round. Vice-Principal says that Chip has to spell the word. Tittup is the word that Chip has to spell; however he spells "t i t u p" which is not correct because of a missing T. I am so sure that Chip knows how to spell that word, but his arrogance beats himself up. When I was in primary school, everytime my mom always asked about my test, and my answer was always good or great; however the truth was that I never did well on my test when I said that I did very well. The reason was that I would be less careful, if I knew how solve question. Thus, we should always be confident, and we also need to try our best in even every little thing, because details make things perfect.

As we all know, Barfee is the champion of the 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee, and Chip was the champion last year. I consider that Chip and Barfee has the same abilities. The reason why Barfee is the champion instead of Chip is that Barfee finds his confidence back and Chip is too arrogant. Finally, there is one thing that we should never forget. It is that we should be confident not arrogant.

There they inhabit an elaborate cave shelter, bathe in a nearby creek, store perishables at the water’s edge, use a makeshift septic system, tend a garden, even keep a library of sorts.

Spelling Bee

I researchered about The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee on the Internet. It is a long one-act musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finm. It is a really famous show, and it had got lots of honors such as six Tony Awards and Grammy Award. It is also be called "Parent-teacher Conferences" and "adult night at the Bee", because at the beginning they only allowed people who is over 16 years old to see the show. In 2007 the translating started at Soul in Korea. In 2008-2009 Non-Equity U.S. National Tour premiered on October 11, 2008 at the Union Colony Civic Center in Greeley, Colorado, with an official opening in Fort Collins, Colorado on October 14. I think it is a great show not only because it is famous, but also becuse acters are working hard. I have been to blak box nearly every day at Cheshire Academy for two weeks, and I saw so many hard working in it. For example, Jack Jack doesn't let any one to touch the number on the ground because he wants to work faster and better. Also, I can see Andrew ran to the black box three times because he did not want to be late for the practice. I saw the painting which Jack Jack did for the show; the painting is amazing. I never see persin like him before. I remember on last Saturday Andrew told me that he had been practicing for 6 hours a day. I never practice a show for 6 hours, however I know how hard to work on one thing for 6 hours. So I suggest everone could go to the show and give them your best applause for their hard working. To be honest, I can wait for the show.

haiku poems

Yosa Buson

Three examples of the haiku of Yosa Buson from the late 1700s are offered here:
A summer river being crossed
how pleasing
with sandals in my hands!

Light of the moon
Moves west, flowers' shadows
Creep eastward.

In the moonlight,
The color and scent of the wisteria
Seems far away.

Kobayaski Issa

Here are three haiku from Kobayashi Issa, a haiku master poet from the late 1700s and early 1800s:
O snail
Climb Mount Fuji,
But slowly, slowly!

Trusting the Buddha, good and bad,
I bid farewell
To the departing year.

Everything I touch
with tenderness, alas,
pricks like a bramble.

Natsume Soseki

Natsume Soseki lived from 1867 - 1916.  He was a novelist and master of the haiku. Here are a couple of examples of his poems:
Over the wintry
forest, winds howl in  rage
with no leaves to blow.

The crow has flown away:
swaying in the evening sun,
a leafless tree.

Recent Poems

Following are some recent examples of haiku poems:
In the coolness
of the empty sixth-month sky...
the cuckoo’s cry. - Masaoka Shiki

Whitecaps on the bay:
A broken signboard banging
In the April wind. - Richard Wright

Lily:
out of the water
out of itself - Nick Virgilio

ground squirrel
balancing its tomato
on the garden fence - Don Eulert

As the wind does blow
Across the trees, I see the
Buds blooming in May

I walk across sand
And find myself blistering
In the hot, hot heat

Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
In a bed of brown.

It’s cold—and I wait
For someone to shelter me
And take me from here.

I hear crackling
Crunch, of today’s new found day
And know it won’t last

Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
In a bed of brown.

A cricket disturbed
the sleeping child; on the porch
a man smoked and smiled.

I'm turning over
look out and give me room there
you cricket, you.

Peaceful Pearls

In the cover image of Gathering of Pearls, the main character Sookan is wearing a black suit, and she is gathering pearls that have fallen on the floor. Her hair looks a little untidy, and she is sitting on the wood floor. When I look at this picture, I can feel very strong emotions such as sadness, hopeless, desire. She went to America alone and had lots of experiences, and those situations make her emotions getting stronger. For example, she had both good and bad encounters with her American friends, and her mother died at the end of the book. Emotions are one of the most important parts of everyone's life. Sookan's life is changed by the emotions inside of her like the pearls on the floor around her. Every pearl represents a kind of emotion, and some emotions are complicated such as sadness and happiness, eagerness and hopelessness; Sookan must figure out how to balance her conflicting emotions to do what is right for herself in her future.

Emotions have changed Sookan's life a lot. The first emotion is eagerness, when she wants to come to America. Her family members do not want her to go to America, because they think that she is too young to come. When she comes to America, I can feel her fear: “I knew no one in America, and my command of English was poor ” (Choi 1). From this situation, we can see that she is worrying about her situation like a little helpless girl, so she decides that she will become a stronger person, and she will try to adapt to  American culture. As a lonely college girl, she learns how to be a more independent person by facing her fear.

She also works very hard on her studying : "She suggested music appreciation and a studio art class. But I signed up for world literature, world religious, Greek and Roman culture, and early European history " (Choi 18).  As we can see,she gets so many extremely difficult classes, because she wants to go up to a better level of her American education life. She over works, when she comes back toher dorm: " At the end of the hall was the showe room, the only room in the building where the lights were kept on all night. There, at the end of the long row of showers, were five sparkling clean bathtubs. I headed to the tub in the corner and spread out my blanket, placed my pillow at the back, and laid my books on the floor" (Choi 73). From this information, we can see she starts to learn and work extremely hard, and she is trying to not just survival and thrive. Thus, Sookan learns how to be more independent from those experiences and she is also achieving her goals.

In addition, emotions influence Sookan's feeling and decisions. For example, when she is angry with Ellen, she says bad words to her and she leaves Ellen alone, because she doesn't know what she should do:  " I had lost my temper and I had hurt Ellen. I didn't go back downstairs until I was sure Ellen would be asleep, and the next morning I tiptoed out of the room before she woke up" (Choi 118). From this sentence we can know, she sometimes makes bad decisions because of her feeling. Another example is when Father Lee comes and tells her mother's death: " I didn't speak, and suddenly, I didn't even have the energy to cry. I just sat, thankful he was there and wishing he would never stop talking. I think he knew, for he continued" (Choi 150). This paragraph is about her reaction when she hears the bad news; she doesn't even have a power to cry, because her heart fills with sadness and hopeless. On the other hand, emotions also bring her some good feelings. For instance she says about Sister Reed, " I would always remember her, and I hoped that we someday, I would be able to make a young girl feel as proud and happy as she made me" (Choi 94). As we can see, when they have a little party, Sookan is full with happiness and passion. I can feel how happy she is, and I am sure that she is too happy to speak it out. Thus, emotion is such a important thing in her life, and they can make her to feel better or worse sometimes, so she has to learn how to control emotions to make the best decisions.

Sometimes Sookan needs to balance her emotions to keep calm. In this book, we can always see complicated emotions, for example "Flustered, I faltered, then hurriedly responded,'Yes, well, I had a good time, too. Good night.' I pulled my hand from his, and ran inside" (Choi 126). From what she says, we can see that she has a really happy and exciting emotion; however when her friends tell her that she drank alcohol, she has a much different reaction. " 'You mean I went out on a date and drank alcohol? That sounds so wild!' I said.'Actually, though, there was nothing wild about it. But if my sister ever found out, she would really think I was losing my values' " (Choi 127). I can feel a strong guilt and remorse; as we can see, she has conflicting emotions on the same thing. In my opinion, she is afraid of her sister, so she had those conflicting emotions; however, her mother teaches her how to balance them: "If you ever feel hurt or tired or empty, I hope that you will remember what I have always told you about taking that suffering, and creating a pearl around the pain. Don't let the hurt poison you" (Choi 145). This is what her mother tells her to balance the emotion just like what she is doing in the cover image. In the image, she is gathering pearls which are conflictive emotions, and this is how she balances them. Thus, Sookan finally understands her mother's words, and she balances all emotions successfully.

In the end of the novel, she finally becomes alone in America without any family members, and her mother dies. For most people like her age, they cannot take this pain; however, Sookan takes it by herself. I believe that she will find out what her mother wants she to find out what kind of person she wants to be, and she will have a brighter future with all her friends and her mother's wishes. "Tough times are the times when one gathers one's pearls," (Choi 163), just like Sookan works hard to build a peaceful life like a pearl.
